National-Level Plots

Plots displaying national-level trends (US) for capital punishment. The y-axes of the first two plots are different races and the x-axes represent time. Each dot represents an execution that took place - the more solid the color is of bunched up dots, the more frequent or concentrated they are at that point (increase in frequency). The last plot also uses time on the x-axis but uses the number of executions as the response variable.

Notes on National Plots

The following points are in regards to the prior plots and what could be determined from them.

  • Since 1976, there has been a prevalence of white and black individuals being executed over other races

    • Largest spikes reside in the 90’s and early 2000’s

  • Certain states/entities serve as focal points for executions

    • Ie. Texas historically demonstrates a disproportionate amount of these executions

    • Federal executions experienced a “random” spike after 2020

  • Over time, incorporation of the death penalty has waned
